I just love this scent. Something many people don’t know about Annick Goutal fragrances is that many of them are unisex – this and Eau d’Sud being the two most obvious examples. So I (being a man) don’t feel ashamed at all when I wear d’Hadrien.

Thing is, this fragrance has many things that most don’t. Originality, style, sensibility, charm, rather than just an avalanche of concocted chemicals to distort ones nostrils. (Although, one thing I really don’t understand is why on earth it is called “Eau d’Hadrien”. I mean, what’s it got to do with the “emotions evoked by the Emperor Hadrien”, as Annick Goutal put it so wonderfully themselves…)

This is a perfume made all about citrus. Annick Goutal claim that the main scent of the fragrance is “Sicilian Lemon”. What on earth the difference between “Sicilian Lemons” and “Lemons” is, I have absolutely no idea. But the fact remains, that lemons are delicious.

Ever tried a drink called “Limoncello”? It’s a liqueur from southern Italy, whose smell you would no doubt recognize. Well, the alcohol and the lemons in Eau d’Hadrien mirrors the ingredients of Limoncello. Add a bit of bergamot, orange juice, and a teabag, and you have Eau d’Hadrien. Ok, sounds simple….well it is! (But you can’t just do it yourself though, obviously….)

Eau d’Hadrien is a happy fragrance. It will show people you are not a miserable moaner, but a happy individual who loves life. It’s an upbeat, colourful, and effective fragrance, well worth it’s price tag. And the only difference between the “pour homme” and “pour femme” versions, is the bottle! However, Goutal only make this in a Eau de Parfum concentration in the “pour femme” bottles. So Beware!

Overall, an excellent perfume, well worth trying. It is Annick Goutal’s trademark, and since 1981 has been a favourite of perfume lovers across the world.

Being no expert on the French language myself, I can’t stress enough just how much I dislike the way French perfumers who sell their products internationally always give their perfumes ridiculously complicated French names.

So imagine my joy when I first laid eyes on a 30ml bottle of Yves Saint Laurent “L’Homme”. That’s easy! It means “the man”. Looking back now, I realise that I already liked this perfume, even though I hadn’t smelled it, simply because I understood it’s title, which still retained French charm.

I bought some, and tried it on. And boy was I shocked. Smells nothing like a man at all.

“In fact,” I thought to myself, “that smells like flowers”!

So, what do perfume testers do next? I went and hugged my girlfriend. And she clung on far tighter than she usually does, sniffing it in. Then comments on how she likes my scent. Success.

So how can a floral perfume be masculine and attractive to ladies? God only knows, but “L’Homme” is a delicious and seductive fragrance, guaranteed to get you some looks from the girls. My chief criticism is, however, that it doesn’t really seem to last very long. The main body of the scent seems to wear off sooner than it should, leaving a very weak and diluted smell on the skin. Still though, a great perfume.

Many perfume lovers actually get stuck when it comes to understanding the descriptions which are found both on paper and on the web about perfumes. Well, this needn’t be, as understanding perfume descriptions is an easy task. A basic description incorporates three features:

The Top Notes – sometimes known as the head notes, are the first fragrances you smell after just applying the perfume. This is because they evaporate the quickest thanks to heat from the skin. For this reason they are very important in the initial impression of a perfume, therefore important when selling.

The Middle Notes - sometimes known as the heart notes, are the scents noticed when the top notes have disappeared. These also act to mask the unpleasant initial impression of the base notes, which becomes more pleasant with time. Middle notes are the main body and scent of a perfume.

The Base Notes - the base notes, along with the middle notes, make the main scent of a perfume. These are not smelled until about 30 minutes after application. They are usually dark scents, with lots of depth.

By carefully sniffing your favourite perfume on skin from the time of application onwards, you will notice the gradual change in scent, and be able to describe it like a professional reviewer.

The alignment of the three notes of a perfume can also be displayed in a Perfume Pyramid:

This can clearly show (with the various scents and stages added) the attributes of a perfume, and can give the keen sniffer a relatively good idea of the perfume’s scent before it has even been smelt!

Author and perfume critic of the New York Times, Chandler Burr is all set to host a perfume dinner on October 23, 2008 at Natalie’s at Camden Harbour Inn. Natalie’s chef de cuisine, Lawrence Clang has been working with Chandler Burr to create the special menu for the dinner.

The owner of the Camden Harbour Inn, Raymond Brunyanszki said that they are extremely proud that Chandler Burr approached them for the perfume dinner and claimed that the dinner is sure to be filled with surprises. Burr’s new book “The Perfect Scent: A Year Inside the Perfume Industry in Paris & New York” published in January 2008 contain two parallel stories – first about a year that Burr spent for the New York Magazine in Paris and the second about a year inside Coty with Sarah Jessica Parker as she directed the making of her perfume “Lovely.”

Natalie’s Inn is a classic European style inn atop a stunning hillside offering views of picturesque Camden Harbour, Mount Battle and Penobscot Bay.

Clive Christian is not a perfume brand which is know in every household. It is not a perfume brand which is common, or well known. But it is significant for one thing: it produces the most expensive perfume in the World.

Clive Christian “Imperial Majesty”, is sold in bottles of 16.9 ounces, adorned with a gold collar, and holding a beautiful five-carat diamond. Yes, thats a good diamond.

I dread to think about buying the empty bottle – let alone the actual perfume in it!

However, it’s not something you can just waltz into Selfridges and buy, regardless of it’s cost. Only five bottles are manufactured anually, making it the most rare perfume in commercial production.

So the final question: how much is it?

Well, at only $215′000 USD a bottle, it’s quite affordable if you are the Duke of Atlantis. Apart from that, it is something to be marvelled at, more than desired.

Britney Spears is all set to launch her new perfume “Hidden Fantasy” together with her new album “Circus” on 2nd December – her 27th birthday.

The singer is working with Elizabeth Arden Perfume Company for all her beauty ventures and sources close to her say that her new perfume would smell of cherry and vanilla. The bottle of the new perfume is the same as that of the two previous Fantasy perfumes and the only difference is the colour red on it.

Britney is following the league of other high profile stars like Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, and Sarah Jessica Parker in launching her own perfume. The pop diva has already launched a lot of other perfumes including Curious, Fantasy, Curious Heart, In Control, Midnight fantasy and Believe. Experts believe that Britney has earned a whopping 13 million pounds with her public and private meltdown that increased the popularity of the fragrances.

ITF International, the Italian company will be introducing perfume trio at the TFWA World exhibition in Cannes this month. The three perfumes are Dsquared² She Wood, Ferré Acqua Azury for Men and Ferré Rose Princesse.

The woody floral scent, She Wood is created by Daphne Bugey and the perfume is said to share the same qualities as the masculine version, He wood. Ferré Acqua Azury for Men has been created by Mark Buxton and it is a fresh woody scent with marine notes. Ferré Rose Princesse is described at the ‘undisputed symbol of femininity’ and is said to have been inspired from a precious and aristocratic hybrid of tea rose. It has been created by Karine Dubreuil.

TFWA World exhibition in Cannes is conducted every year during October and brings together the industry’s most prestigious luxury brands.
