Eau d’Hadrien.

I just love this scent. Something many people don’t know about Annick Goutal fragrances is that many of them are unisex – this and Eau d’Sud being the two most obvious examples.  So I (being a man) don’t feel ashamed at all when I wear d’Hadrien.

Thing is, this fragrance has many things that most don’t. Originality, style, sensibility, charm, rather than just an avalanche of concocted chemicals to distort ones nostrils. (Although, one thing I really don’t understand is why on earth it is called “Eau d’Hadrien”. I mean, what’s it got to do with the “emotions evoked by the Emperor Hadrien”, as Annick Goutal put it so wonderfully themselves…)

This is a perfume made all about citrus. Annick Goutal claim that the main scent of the fragrance is “Sicilian Lemon”. What on earth the difference between “Sicilian Lemons” and “Lemons” is, I have absolutely no idea. But the fact remains, that lemons are delicious.

Ever tried a drink called “Limoncello”? It’s a liqueur from southern Italy, whose smell you would no doubt recognize. Well, the alcohol and the lemons in Eau d’Hadrien mirrors the ingredients of Limoncello.  Add a bit of bergamot, orange juice, and a teabag, and you have Eau d’Hadrien. Ok, sounds simple….well it is! (But you can’t just do it yourself though, obviously….)

Eau d’Hadrien is a happy fragrance. It will show people you are not a miserable moaner, but a happy individual who loves life. It’s an upbeat, colourful, and effective fragrance, well worth it’s price tag. And the only difference between the “pour homme” and “pour femme” versions, is the bottle! However, Goutal only make this in a Eau de Parfum concentration in the “pour femme” bottles. So Beware!

Overall, an excellent perfume, well worth trying. It is Annick Goutal’s trademark, and since 1981 has been a favourite of perfume lovers across the world.

The characteristics of a Perfume and how to describe them.

Many perfume lovers actually get stuck when it comes to understanding the descriptions which are found both on paper and on the web about perfumes. Well, this needn’t be, as understanding perfume descriptions is an easy task. A basic description incorporates three features:

  • The Top Notes – sometimes known as the head notes, are the first fragrances you smell after just applying the perfume. This is because they evaporate the quickest thanks to heat from the skin. For this reason they are very important in the initial impression of a perfume, therefore important when selling.
  • The Middle Notes - sometimes known as the heart notes, are  the scents noticed when the top notes have disappeared. These also act to mask the unpleasant initial impression of the base notes, which becomes more pleasant with time. Middle notes are the main body and scent of a perfume.
  • The Base Notes - the base notes, along with the middle notes, make the main scent of a perfume. These are not smelled until about 30 minutes after application. They are usually dark scents, with lots of depth.

By carefully sniffing your favourite perfume on skin from the time of application onwards, you will notice the gradual change in scent, and be able to describe it like a professional reviewer.

The alignment of the three notes of a perfume can also be displayed in a Perfume Pyramid: A Perfume Pyramid

This can clearly show (with the various scents and stages added) the attributes of a perfume, and can give the keen sniffer a relatively good idea of the perfume’s scent before it has even been smelt!

Annick Goutal – the Rolls-Royce of perfume

Annick Goutal - The Perfect PerfumeA QUICKIE ABOUT ‘MY PERSONAL PERFUME’

Something which many of us don’t realize at all, it just how wonderful Annick Goutal is. It was in fact first introduced to the world nearly 30 years ago, in 1981. An age dominated by style, is was the perfect decade for perfumes as original and perfect as those of Annick Goutal’s to be born, and it still retains its distinctive classic French character to this day and age.

I was first introduced to Annick Goutal by my grandmother in 2000, when I received some for my 21st birthday. It was her personal favourite, my mother’s too, and it later grew to be mine as well. But one of the first things I learned about these expensive liquids was that one must not wear them on an everyday basis (unless one really can afford to). For me Eau de Camille (my favourite) has always been a perfume to be loved and treasured, and a perfume which is only to be worn on special occasions. (Eg. Don’t use it as a substitute for Frebreeze!)

The next thing I learned was just how much this magnificent perfume meant to my grandmother. She had tried her first sample when she was a woman of 60, and fell in love with it. It was also a wedding anniversary present given to her by my grandfather, giving it a huge semtimental value to her, as she lost him during the winter of 2001.  Now, if this perfume had such a direct link with my family, then I was going to feel it too. I loved my Grandfather, and the perfumes of Annick Goutal always makes me think of him, which I think is nice.

The final thing I learned (and this is the opinionated part) is that (for me) Annick Goutal Eau de Camille is simply the best perfume in existence.  I just love it: its distinctive and indescribable fragrance, its beautiful natural-looking colour. Everything about this perfume for me is just wonderful.

So there you have it: The Rolls-Royce of perfume, all summed up in a bottle. Hope you enjoyed this!

I get my supply of Annick Goutal  from that website,

Profit Growth of L’Oreal Slows Down as Shoppers Reduce Spending

L’Oreal SA, the world’s largest cosmetic maker, said that their first-half profit rose 6.8 percent, the slowest growth in three years, as European and U.S shoppers reduced their spending on skin care products, perfumes and other cosmetics.

The Paris-based firm said that their net income in the six months through June climbed to 1.26 billion Euros from 1.18 billion Euros a year earlier. The maker of Maybelline makeup and Lancome perfume last month reported the slowest quarterly growth rate in three years and reduced their sales target. Profit of the company, as a percentage of sales, widened by 0.4 percentage points to 17.3 percent during this period.

In a bid to compensate for a weaker dollar and slowing demand in both Western Europe and the U.S, L’Oreal has expanded in the emerging markets, from Russia to China.
